Echoes of Self is a seven-chapter self-portrait series by Ton Schless exploring identity, memory, and time’s passage in search of his Ikigai—life’s purpose. Created with a 4x5” large-format camera using the 1800s dry plate process, each glass plate carries unique imperfections, echoing the fragility of recollection. Natural metaphors—roots, water, stone, wind—merge with the human form to evoke belonging and impermanence. Printed in platinum-palladium on washi paper, the work invites slow reflection on the traces we leave behind.
