This photo was taken in Tonga during an encounter with a mother whale and calf. Captured without tanks or scuba gear, relying only on freediving. The key is not chasing but waiting in stillness, as if part of the sea. Through Shinto training I gained the calm that let the whales approach. Then came the miracle of meeting the whale’s gaze, the ocean reflected in its eye. Swimming together, passing beneath its fin with no threat. The pair left gracefully, and I watched with gratitude. This work shows a dialogue between humanity and nature, symbolizing the fragile yet profound bond that unites us.
